Glowing tent and campfire under a starry sky

How to Choose a Headlamp for Hiking and Camping

A good headlamp keeps both hands free when the sun goes down, whether you are finishing a hike late, setting up a tent or looking for something in the car. Here is what to look for.

1. Pick the right brightness

Brightness is measured in lumens. Around camp, a low setting is plenty for cooking and reading, and it saves battery. On a dark trail you want a stronger setting so you can see roots and rocks ahead. The most useful headlamps give you several levels so you can switch as needed.

2. Flood or spot beam?

A flood beam spreads light wide, which is great for camp chores. A spot beam reaches further, which helps on the trail. Headlamps with an adjustable zoom let you do both with one light.

3. Rechargeable beats disposable

USB rechargeable headlamps save money on batteries and are easy to top up from a power bank or car charger. Check the runtime on the modes you will use most, not just the lowest setting.

4. Comfort and handy extras

Look for a light head unit and an adjustable strap that does not bounce. Extras like a motion sensor (wave to turn on or off) and a red light mode, which helps protect your night vision, make a big difference in real use.
